Frequently Asked Questions

We have answered the most frequently asked questions about online jewellers to help you better understand us and feel more informed before you make a purchase.

The supply of lab grown's is not controlled by a singular entity, instead, they are grown by diamantaires inside of a facility. They will determine the price based on a number of situational factors.

The fact that no extraction & exploitation is actually required to produce a lab grown diamond greatly reduces the markup from mine-to-dealer.

WHY DO THEY COST LESS?

Yes, lab grown diamonds are a much more eco-friendly alternative to mined diamonds. They involve no land destruction, no chemical leaching, and fairly minimal transport emissions.

Even with their small energy usage, we can say with full confidence that going lab-grown is the most sustainable, ethical & practical option out there.

ARE LAB GROWN DIAMONDS SUSTAINABLE?

There are two types of growing methods used today; both CVD and HPHT. The most popular method of lab-grown diamond formation is called Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) which is started by placing a thin wafer of natural diamond into a high-pressure reactor where it is subject to high heats of up to 800°c and then blasted with a carbon-rich gas mixture (usually Hydrogen and Methane).

The introduced gas is then ionised to break its own chemical bonds causing carbon to precipitate onto the diamond, building an incredible diamond structure with minimal inclusions that are ideally suited for jewellery applications. This method of creation is a favoured option between many growers and consumers alike as it uses much more efficient technology and produces very consistent diamonds.

HPHT is the name given to a lab-grown diamond formation process that involves large amounts of heat and carbon based gasses. The word HPHT stands for High Pressure and High Temperature, describing the entire process perfectly in one sentence. A small fleck of a diamond is placed in a high-pressure chamber where it sits on top of pure carbon ready to be heated. The chamber is heated to 2,600°C simulating the ideal conditions for a diamond to grow, this is followed by an increase in pressure rising up to 1.5 million PSI eventually causing the pure carbon to precipitate and fuse together forming one larger diamond.

HOW ARE LAB GROWN DIAMONDS CREATED?

No, Lab Grown Diamonds are identical to mined diamonds in every single way, much like ice from your freezer and ice from a glacier. Fake Diamonds are more technically known as ‘Simulated diamonds’, referring to a gemstone made from a material that exhibits visual similarities to that of a diamond but are made from a completely different material to mimic diamond. Simulated Diamonds consist of stones such as cubic zirconia, moissanite and white sapphires, these stones are made of other materials and structured in a totally different way.

ARE LAB GROWN DIAMONDS FAKE?

Lab Grown Diamonds are diamonds, meaning there isn't a single difference between them but the origin and how they were created. Mined Diamonds are created underneath the Earth but require extreme excavation and mining operations to acquire them. From many years of mining diamonds and technical development, we are now able to replicate the process in a lab to create beautiful diamonds, a more sustainable, ethical and logical option.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES?

Our Lab-Grown Diamonds are graded using only GIA grading criteria which allows us to follow some of the highest standards in the industry. However, before your diamond is cut we will select a rough diamond based on the colour grade required, we then plan the most efficient cut area while matching your colour and clarity requirements. Although we offer our Envirodiamond certification as standard, you can request for additional certification like Sarine, IGI or EGL.

So, instead of our diamonds being cut and then sent to be graded, we can choose and cut the diamond based on the grading requirements you desire. Rough lab grown diamonds are categorised and sorted by colour so we can choose your desired colour grade accurately. We use technology that allows us to see any inclusions in the rough diamond and map the best cutting area that matches your clarity requirements.

We will always grade your selected diamond fairly and make sure that you receive a diamond with superior colour and clarity. We pride ourselves on the quality of our diamond cutting because our diamantaires have been involved in the industry for decades and come from a family background of jewellers and diamantaires.

WHAT IS ENVIRODIAMOND CERTIFICATION?

Our different options of diamond certification present different benefits, if you are purchasing an engagement ring, additional certification can help you to understand all the properties of your diamond in detail. But if you are purchasing a jewellery that features multiple diamonds, certification is not as recommended because it is more costly and is not as detailed compared to if they were analysing 1 diamond, it is easier to achieve higher clarity and colour in smaller stones so the quality always exceeds the expectations.

DO I NEED DIAMOND CERTIFICATION?

The 4 Cs of a diamond are clarity, colour, carat and cut, each measuring a different property of the diamond that effects the look and overall value of the diamond. Clarity is how clear the diamond is, if there are more inclusions present in the diamond, the clarity grade will be lower, inclusions are small marks that are caused when the rough diamond was being formed.

Colour is a measurement of how white or coloured your diamond is, if you are getting a white diamond then the whiter the diamond means higher the colour grade. If you are looking at diamonds with a lower colour grade like I or J there will be a noticeable yellow or grey tint.

Carat is the unit that measures how heavy the diamond is, the larger the diamond, the higher the carat weight. Carat weight is often used by consumers to see what is worth more, but this is not an accurate measurement, because you can have 1 carat of many smaller diamonds and it will be no where near as valuable as 1 carat of a few diamonds.

Cut is a rating of how well the diamond has been cut, the better the cut, the brighter your diamond will shine. With a lot of experience and the right equipment, an excellent cut rating can be achieved every time, this is why we only provide excellent cut diamonds and no lower.

WHAT ARE THE DIAMOND 4 Cs?

Sometimes referred to as cut, diamond shape is the overall shape of the diamond and more importantly how it was cut, because there are many rectangular shape diamonds but all with different cut styles. For example an Asscher cut is a square step cut diamond and when made into a rectangle, it is then known as an emerald shape, similarly a radiant cut with is essentially a princess cut diamond but rectangular.

WHAT IS DIAMOND SHAPE?

Our Diamonds are some of the most competitively priced lab-grown diamonds available in the UK to this day, every single diamond is hand selected from rough and then cut as-per your requirements.

Conventional jewellers will usually out-source lab grown diamonds that have already been cut & graded. This use of pre-stocked diamonds leads to a large price jump after they are cut, polished and graded, therefore restricting you to a select group of diamonds. Here at Envirodiamond we can cut, polish & grade all of our lab-grown diamonds from rough according to your requirements, this gives you the highest level of flexibility when buying a diamond as you are not limited to the shape, colour, or the price.

Not only do you have unlimited freedom while choosing your diamond specifications, but you are also gifted with the choice of any shaped diamond far beyond the 10 cuts that we showcase on our store page. Lapidary has become so advanced now so we are able to cut almost any unique shape of diamond with ease, we provide something conventional jewellers simply struggle to offer.

WHAT MAKES OUR DIAMONDS SPECIAL?

Precious metals are the metals that are used to create fine jewellery, consisting of Gold Platinum, Rhodium and silver. There are many other metals that can be used to create fine jewellery, but we believe that these are the best choices for a quality look. We provide gold in 10, 14 and 18 Karat purity but we mostly recommend 14 karat as it is the best balance of strength, colour and price.

WHAT ARE PRECIOUS METALS?

Gold in its purest form is 24 Karat, because it is so fragile on its own, it cannot be used to create jewellery. So gold is mixed with other metals to give it more strength, the highest purity of gold in fine jewellery is 18 Karat, which gives the strongest colour but can also be very easy to damage. 14 Karat is the most popular purity of gold because of the balance it gives. 10K is used more in cheaper jewellery, but if you are looking to cut some costs, you can get 10K which will have the weakest colour because of it being mixed with the most metals.

WHAT IS GOLD KARAT?

Raw gold has a yellow glow that has even gained its own class of colour, but when gold is mixed with other metals in fine jewellery it can change the overall colour of the metal, that's why there are 3 main colour options; white, yellow and rose. Our white gold is especially popular and is given a Rhodium plating to make sure the purity of the gold does not affect how white the metal is.

WHAT IS GOLD COLOUR?

Firstly, we cut & polish the diamonds that are needed in your jewellery, during this process your design is 3D printed into a wax mould where it is then casted into your chosen metal. When the diamonds are ready, they are carefully set into the jewellery by hand with the utmost precision, after the setter is happy with the setting quality, the jewellery is given the finish you were looking for. Once the jewellery is finished being crafted, we evaluate the quality and make sure there are no imperfections in the craftsmanship.

HOW IS OUR JEWELLERY MADE?

After the metal has been casted into a mould, it is pieced together and the metal is given a finish so the shape and look is more defined. The most common finish given to precious metals is a normal polish, which gives it a glossy and shiny finish. Brushed is a finish that is more commonly seen in some luxury watches but gives a contemporary matte finish with a brushed look. The most unheard of and newly popular finish is what we like to refer to as frosted, it gives the metal a sparkly appearance that looks like diamonds because of the way that it sparkles on the surface.

WHAT IS METAL FINISH?

Jewellery setting refers to the way that your diamond/s is set into the jewellery, on engagement rings this would mainly refer to the way the main stone is set, or it could refer to how the many smaller diamonds are set. Prong, bezel and tension are the main ways that a main stone can be set into an engagement ring, prong is the most popular setting in our fine jewellery because of the security it gives to the stone. If you are getting jewellery set with many small stones, it is likely to be pave or channel, pave is with many small round stones and channel is used with flat sided shapes with no gaps between the diamonds.

WHAT IS JEWELLERY SETTING?

It depends on the complexity of your design but is normally made in less than 14 days, some designs can be made in less than a week but some larger and more complex designs can take 14 days or more.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE JEWELLERY?

For every order we receive, we plant a handful of trees to go with it, this is possible because of Tree Nation and their amazing team of planters. After purchasing your item, you will be sent updates and images of your trees so you know it has been done. This is all in an attempt to keep our carbon footprint as low as possible by offsetting it with tree planting.

HOW DO WE PLANT TREES?

Yes, the outer packaging that holds your jewellery box is made from a biodegradable material and is not made from plastic, all tape and labels are also made from eco-friendly materials so the whole thing can be put in the normal bin. The jewellery box inside is not made from these materials as we believe this will stay with you forever and not be thrown away.

IS OUR PACKAGING ECO-FRIENDLY?

We only use lab grown diamonds in our jewellery which is a sustainable alternative to mined diamonds because they do not require to be mined and do not contribute to any unethical practices. Because our diamonds and jewellery is all made to order and all under 1 roof, this means there are less steps before your jewellery is delivered to you, minimising our carbon footprint.

IS OUR JEWELLERY SUSTIANABLE?

Recycled gold is gold that has been extracted from forms of waste like electrical parts or other industrial applications of gold. Gold has many uses and is found in more things as technology develops so to keep up with this and waste as little as possible, we only use recycled gold.

WHAT IS RECYCLED GOLD?

When requesting a bespoke design, you are required to provide us with either an image of the design you are looking for or a link to the design on another website. This is what gives the foundation to your bespoke request, after that you can make any required adjustments to the design.
